Should you be going to the gym if running is your priority?
I know that for runners all we want to do is RUN. I also know that people say that you get better at running BY RUNNING.
I also know, for sure, that strength training will make you a better runner.
I have worked with Fiona Davidson from FiTrain PT since I decided to get fit again. I know that my journey would absolutely be very different had I not worked with her.
We have worked on strength, strength endurance, correcting instabilities in my body and conditioning.
I would say, without question, it’s kept me injury free and has improved my recovery times dramatically.
I’m writing this post out of the other side of running 33.8 miles and had experienced no soreness or DOMS in the recovery period AT ALL.
She does make me work hard in the gym, yup there are times where I’m sore the day after and the day after that BUT that has been so so so valuable in strengthening my body (and my mind) for the tasks ahead.
The little video above is a success story video produced by Bannatynes Gym Group the gym I’m a member of.
I know that gymtimidation is a real thing. I experienced it. I was scared of being in the gym enviroment, I was scared of messing up, I was scared of getting it wrong.
Most people aren’t spending their time looking at you. They are more interested in their own training sessions. You should also know that you don’t avoid places like the airport or a coffee shop because people spend time people watching in those places.
I’m a huge advocate of the fact that strength and conditioning training should be included in every runners schedule. Stronger/fitter/faster and farther! All things are covered and I believe it’s made me a better runner quicker, cut down on my recovery times and kept injury at bay.
