Middlesbrough 10k Race Report

Middlesbrough 10K was gonna be my first experience of acting as a PACER.

I was super excited to volunteer for this one. It’s something I’d NEVER done before and was really keen to support other runners around the 10k course. When I popped up my hand to do this I made sure that I selected a time that I knew that I would be super comfortable running and therefore got the flag for 1hr 25mins – and decided that we were gonna be the

I did my research (read Paul Addicot’s blog because he’s an absolute fucking legend pacer ~ you can find his blog here >>click to take a look <<

As the day approached I got RIDICULOUSLY nervous. I felt the pressure of other people relying on me. At the beginning of the year I couldn’t run 10k and now other people were relying on me to go out there and support them through the distance.

I knew I was more than capable.

I knew I’d selected a time that was achieveable without question.

I felt great lining up and the nerves disappeared.

The first few miles it was so hard to get the pacing right. Whenever we checked in with our watches and realised we were going a little fast, needed to slow it down and keep that gentle rhythm.

We got our groove.

Concentrating on those split times was important.

We were to be a sighter for those behind and spur along those who might have stopped for a little rest along the way.

The last couple of kilometers was all about getting people to the finish.

It was HUGELY rewarding.

If you ever have the opportunity to pace, grab it. It’s such a different experience of racing and so much fun.
